What an amazing Tour this has been for Sky Procycling. The Bradley Wiggins in first and Christopher Frome in second. We thought we would pay homage on this last poster of the Tour de Lead Graffiti.
Mark Cavendish won his 23 stage win, best among sprinters and fourth on the all-time list.
In all they won 6 of the 21 stages.
This has been great fun. Thanks to all that contributed in all of the various ways from Ray, Jill and Tray.

Turning out to be a bit obscure, but we like it, and I guess, if you figure it out, you’ll at least kind of like it.
Bradley Wiggins of Sky Procycling showed in the Individual Time Trial that he was in the rarefied air of someone that deserves to win the Tour de France. He destroyed the rest of the field with his time.
PDW = Pretty Damn Wiggins.

Mark Cavendish was a blur, winning his 22nd stage in the Tour de France over the past 6 years. This tied him for the most by a sprinter. This guy was so fast as to not believe you were watching it live.

A bit of sense of the breakaway and a design that kind of answers the question. Two handrolled runs were fun. Working on a computer you can easily scale elements and position them exactly like you want them. Letterpress offers a lot of fun trying to figure out where something is going to come out when you cannot place it in the right spot because they are solid object that don’t overlap very easily. We loved how the locked came out exactly where we wanted it and also intruded a bit on the signature block at the bottom.
If you think about we did the “Wiggins Froome” first then the numbers which we wanted to hit both of the surrounding letters but also to be at two different angles, that alone is somewhat hard to figure out. Then two runs later you get to the “locked’ whih needs to fit at two ends and then nudge into the signature block.
We were happy.

This page will be evolving so be sure to refresh it if you come back again.
Once again we will be doing the Tour de Lead Graffiti, following the daily happenings of the 2012 Tour de France and translating them into wood & metal type via letterpress onto wonderfully thick Somerset Textured 300 gsm paper.
We have collaborators signed up for days in the studio working with us on the poster for the various stages.

We had trouble with our outline typeface last year. Even through we made it with endgrain rock maple it developed a troubling texture over the three weeks, essentially picking up the texture of the thick Somerset paper. This year we had it made into copperplates which should solve that problem. This year we are using Agency Gothic and Stymie Bold Condensed as our 2″ high typography.
Check out our project in Kickstarter which explains most of the story and details. Be sure to watch the video which explains some of last year’s posters.

When we started Tour de Lead Graffiti in 2011 we thought we might print bike parts on a number of the posters, but that didn’t work out as well as we thought. Today was a rest day so we could play a bit. We printed from a bike chain in the poster for the first rest day last year and we thought we might turn that into a bit of a ritual for the opening rest day.
